The Baddenham Umberello

Place Collected: Tewkesbury
Date collected: 1908 (11 Apr)
Collector: Sharp, Cecil
Roud Number: 12784

The comic language and trivial humorous nature of this song show a music hall origin but no other version of the song can be traced. However, the tune sounds more like a traditional melody than a music hall song.  There is some confusion over the place name.  Sharp noted it as Baddenham, but said in a footnote “Learnt at Boddenham 50 years ago … there are many verses referring, of course, to a local event.”  The intended place name is probably Bodenham 33 miles from Tewkesbury.
