Palmer, Roy
Back to collectorsRoy Palmer died in 2015, aged 83. He was one of England’s most important folksong researchers and made a special study of the songs printed up to the 20th Century of ‘broadsides’ that were sold in the towns and villages by itinerant pedlars. He has more that 30 books on folksong and folklore to his credit, including ‘The Folklore of Gloucestershire’. As a song collector, Roy sporadically recorded songs and reminiscences during the 1960s and 1970s , mainly in and around Birmingham, and notably from George Dunn. In the late ’80s and early ’90s he continued in the same vein in Gloucestershire. All the material is available online through the British Library.
