The earliest English variants of this widespread ballad were printed on seventeenth century broadsides as ‘The Forlorn Lover’, and it has continued to this day both in print and in oral tradition. Although it has been found in all corners of the British Isles it doesn’t appear to have taken a strong foothold in North America.
