This seems to be one of those songs that a lot of people know, but it is rarely reported by collectors, only one other version (from Suffolk) having been noted. It was published in “Tony Pastor’s Book of Six Hundred Comic Songs and Speeches” in New York in 1867 and purports to show the native cunning of the Irish. The song uses several well-known tunes including “In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree”.
