It is surprising how often in folk song the girl’s father does not approve of his daughter’s suitor and resorts to dastardly measures to split the couple up. The song was printed on broadsides but has remarkable longevity, with several versions turning up from the 1960s onwards, often in the repertoire of gypsy singers.
