This comic song is quite rare and to our knowledge has only appeared twice before. A version was collected by Peter Kennedy from Bill Murphy, a London dock hand and another version which appeared as “A Sea Chantey” in the “Intercollegiate Outing Club Association 1932”. This association was founded at universities in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
