Wassail Song (Buckland and Laverton)

Back to browse page
Performer: Bayliss, William
Place Collected: Buckland
Date collected: 1909 (7 Apr)
Collector: Sharp, Cecil
Roud Number: 209

Apart from the song, nothing is known of the wassailing custom in Buckland. Curiously, this collected version is much further north than other versions and it is possible that Isaac Bennett learnt the song from someone in the south of the county. Vaughan Williams used verses from this version and from the Little Sodbury version when he published the Gloucestershire Wassail in the Oxford Book of Carols in 1928, coupled with a tune he had collected in Herefordshire from an unknown Gloucestershire singer.
