This song is best known these days to the folk fraternity as a Cotswold Morris dance tune. As a tune, it has spread far and wide. The pastoral nature of the words suggest that it is at least 18^th century, and the many broadside versions bear this out. Surprisingly, it is not often found in oral tradition, and it has been collected a mere handful of times, in England and Scotland. Mr Goode learnt his version from Sam Bennett, singer and Morris dancer from Ilmington, Warwickshire.
