This song is best known these days to the folk fraternity as a Cotswold Morris dance tune. As a tune, it has spread far and wide. The pastoral nature of the words suggest that it is at least 18th century, and the many broadside versions bear this out. Surprisingly, it is not often found in oral tradition, and it has been collected a mere handful of times, in England and Scotland. Mr Goode learnt his version from Sam Bennett, singer and Morris dancer from Ilmington, Warwickshire.
