This charming children’s game is surprisingly rare. Some other versions have boots of Spanish. The old-fashioned language and intricate tune (in singing games terms), suggest that the game is very old, and there is a song from 1609 which starts:

“Shall we daunce the round, the round, the round
And shall we do daunce the round?”
