This song, akin to the “Farmer’s Boy” tale, has a ring of Victorian sentimentality. The earliest is can be dated is broadsides of the mid-19th century, but it has had a vigorous life in the oral tradition world, appearing on both sides of the Atlantic with a fairly consistent text.
