This ballad can be dated back to at least the late 18th century, was printed over and over again and has been in oral circulation ever since, despite its unbelievable story. Cecil Sharp found it many times in the Appalachian mountains and most collectors have come across it. It is sometimes entitled “The Squire of Tamworth”. Danny Brazil’s tune is that used for “Green Grows the Laurel”.
