Many will know the boisterous Irish version “I’ll tell my Ma”, roared out in many a singsong. However, it was a children’s singing game long before groups like the Clancy Brothers brought the song to prominence. Versions of it were noted from the late 19th century onwards and it has been found all over the English-speaking world.
