This song, nearly two centuries old, still holds a spell for today’s folk singers and is often heard in folk clubs and concerts. The story line may seem rather far fetched these days but the rolling meter and impressive tune hold people’s attention. Most collected versions are from southern England but Scottish versions have also been found.
