This cheerful ditty is in the old tradition of cumulative chorus songs.  Many versions have been collected on both sides of the Atlantic, with names such as The Farmyard Song, The Barnyard Song or I had a Little Rooster. Versions can be traced back to a Scottish manuscript of the 1780s, and it is still turning up in oral tradition.
