The theme of the lady only being interested in the man once she finds he has money is recurrent in English folk song.  For other examples, see “If you will walk with me” or “The Green Bed” in this collection.  Apart from English versions, it has been found in Canada and the USA.  Printed versions go back to the early 19th century with the title “Jack Returned from Sea” or “Tarry Sailor”.
