The trials and tribubulations of young apprentices was a common theme in folk song, going back many years.  This particular ballad was very popular among broadside printers and appeared many times from the early 19th century onwards.  It is rare in tradition, but a couple of Suffolk versions were collected in the 60s and 70s and even an Australian version in 1968.
