This song can be traced back to an 1885 Nottingham publication “The Book of Hunting Songs and Sport”, collected by Mrs Chaworth Musters, where the song appears as “The Gallant Little Grey”. It has only been found twice in oral circulation, once in Gloucestershire, and once, with a tune, in Cambridgeshire.
