This popular little ditty has its roots in a seventeenth century broadside ‘A Choice of Inventions’. It is widespread in the English-speaking world. Later versions are usually traced to ‘Three Jovial Welshmen’ but in many versions recorded in the twentieth century the three Welshmen have become ‘An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman’.
