All Hail and Praise

Performer: Archer, Fred
Place Collected: Ashton under Hill
Collector: Davies, Gwilym

This is one of several carols that were sung in the village of Ashton-under-Hill, which until the 1930s was part of Gloucestershire. The others are “Arise ye Sleepy Souls arise”, “Hark, hark, what news” and a version of “While Shepherds Watched”. Nothing is known of the carol and no other versions have been traced but there is a carol of this name in A Collection of Anthems & Psalms published in Nuneaton by John Baraclough for the author, Thomas Collins, [c. 1790] which we have been unable to trace.
