A song which seems to belong to the southern counties of England, but it has occasionally been collected in Scotland. In most versions, the unfortunate protagonist is called Jan but sometimes Roger. Mr Goode learnt his version from Sam Bennett, singer and Morris dancer from Ilmington, Warwickshire.
