As a song this is at least 200 years old and it is first referenced as “The Roving Journeyman”.   Most of the ramblers are Irishmen, but they can be pedlars or, navvy men or in a related version as a “Roving Gambler”. It has been found wherever English is spoken. In view of the Irish vocabulary in the song, it is likely that Danny Brazil learnt his version in Ireland.
